Magnesium Supplementation – Protecting the Heart – Carolyn Dean MD ND

Magnesium deficiency is very common in people with heart disease. In hospitals where doctors understand the important of magnesium, it is administered for acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrhythmia. Like any other muscle, the heart requires magnesium. Magnesium is also used to treat angina or chest pain.

The epidemic of heart disease in women may have its origins in the excessive intake of medically prescribed calcium. In fact, several studies in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) recently proved that very thing. Women who take calcium supplements have a higher risk of heart disease as calcium deposits in their arteries. When heart muscle cells have too much calcium on the inside, they can go into a life-threatening spasm that we call “heart attack”. When they have enough magnesium, the heart muscle cells relax. The prescription medication to prevent calcium build-up is called a “calcium channel blocker”. Nature’s calcium channel blocker is magnesium; it’s the guardian angel of the heart. The most commonly used drugs in high blood pressure are diuretics. The irony of using diuretics is that they deplete the body of magnesium.

Tonight on Dr. Carolyn Dean Live we’ll talk in comprehensive terms about magnesium and mineral supplementation as well as taking calls from our audience.

  1. At the beginning of the show Dr. Dean is asked about the origin of the water/salt portion of the protocol and any studies that showed its effectiveness. I’m not sure why she didn’t mention Dr. Batmanghelidj’s work which was known as the “Water Cure”. Dr. Dean’s recommendations are identical to Dr. Batman and can be found in his book “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water” (1992). He used the water/salt protocol while in prison in Iran 10 or more years prior to publishing the book and many people are aware of his work through his books, YT videos and various watercure websites. Testimonials to its effectiveness can be found in all these locations along with any studies/tests that help substantiate the results. I know when I first read the protocol Dr. Batman came to mind and the same may be true for others. If her protocol pre-dates the Dr. Batman then it might be worthwhile mentioning his work as being developed separately but concurrently. I wouldn’t want Dr. Dean to get caught up in one of those “I found it first” discussions.
