5 little known nutrients to supercharge your health

Not a week goes by without health experts proclaiming the miraculous effects of some superfood or nutrient that they claim is the key to perfect health.

And, I’m sure you’ve been told a thousand times that you need Vitamin D, Calcium, B-Vitamins and superfoods like wheatgrass and blueberries. But what if I told you there are also nutrients which, while not getting as much attention, are just as effective at supporting key functions in the body?

Here are 5 little known but powerful super nutrients that can give your body a boost and leave you feeling nutritionally complete.

  1. Pea Protein, Non-GMO

An excellent protein source, but it also provides fiber and prebiotics. Here are the factors that make pea powder a beneficial source of protein:

  • Hypoallergenic, containing no gluten, casein, or lactose.
  • Easy to digest.
  • High in the branch-chain amino acids, the major building blocks of muscle.
  • High protein content between 80-90%.
  • Aids weight-loss because it makes you feel full.
  • Yellow peas contain a protein that may help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
  1. L-Lysine (plant-based)

An essential amino acid that the body must obtain from the diet, because we can’t synthesize it on our own. Lysine is the precursor to carnitine, an amino acid derivative that is responsible for converting fatty acids into energy and helping to lower cholesterol. Lysine plays a role in calcium absorption and assists in the formation of collagen—the building block of connective tissues. It supports normal growth and development and helps create a healthy immune system. Lysine deficiency is said to be rare in typical American diets, but can be a risk for strict vegetarians, vegans, or elite athletes. Not having enough lysine in the diet can lead to fatigue, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, agitation, bloodshot eyes, slow growth, anemia, and reproductive disorders.

  1. Prebiotic Fiber – Tapioca

A starch extracted from cassava root, tapioca provides fiber and important prebiotics.

Benefits of a high fiber diet include:

  • Normalizes bowel movements
  • Helps maintain bowel health
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • Helps control blood sugar levels
  • Aids in achieving healthy weight

A soluble but non-digestible fiber, called soluble fiber dextrin, is found in tapioca, wheat, and corn. However, unlike wheat and corn, tapioca is hypoallergenic. Tapioca soluble fiber dissolves in water and can help make you feel full. It sweeps the bowel, as it gives it bulk, to improve intestinal motility. It’s also a prebiotic, which I explore more under Inulin

  1. Prebiotic Inulin

Used for its prebiotic properties and its focus on promoting the growth of bifidus and lactobacillus bacteria. These beneficial probiotics help populate the bowel and bump out harmful bacteria; they help stimulate the immune system and increase the production of dietary vitamin B complex. Researchers agree that Agave Inulin contains negligible calories and does not raise the blood sugar or require insulin for assimilation.

What is a prebiotic? It is fermented by the colon’s bacteria, providing a safe, warm, nutrient-dense incubator, where beneficial probiotic organisms can grow and flourish – thus the name prebiotic. Probiotics have become hugely important in maintaining our health since we’ve all but decimated our intestinal flora with antibiotics and toxins. Prebiotics occur naturally in Tapioca and Inulin.

  1. Organic Acerola Powder

Acerola is a powerful antioxidant, like most berries and cherries provided by nature. Acerola cherry is also called Barbados cherry, or West Indian cherry, growing on shrubs located in tropical regions worldwide. Its small, bright-red fruits are extremely high in vitamin C, providing around 1,500 milligrams per 100 milligrams of fruit. Acerola achieves a high antioxidant potential because of its high vitamin C content.
