Did you know that the human gut is classically defined as the sinuses in the nose, all the way to the pharynx, the esophagus and include the pulmonary vasculature in the pulmonary system where the lungs do their work as a similar membrane…then, keep going down the esophagus and down into the stomach, small intestines, colon, rectum. The huge neural network that controls that inner skin of the gut is really an imperative aspect of health and well-being that may be getting your attention more than you’d like.
Many people will experience digestive symptoms such as an upset stomach, gas, bloating, heartburn, nausea, constipation or diarrhea every once and a while – especially during the holiday season when the tendency is to overindulge in food and drink.
But when symptoms persist, it may be an indicator that the gastrointestinal function of the body is impaired. Gastrointestinal [GI] impairments may be called a ‘syndrome’ indicating a multiplicity of conditions contributing to an outcome. For example, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a set of medical conditions such as abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation that can be unpredictable and inconvenient. Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) is an umbrella term used to describe inflammation of the digestive tract such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter – the ring between the esophagus and the stomach allowing stomach acid to come back up into the esophagus. Celiac disease is a compromise in the immune system where glutens are not easily digested and may cause damage to the small intestine.
Once these conditions get your attention, you may turn to a health care professional to sort out what’s going on and how to get relief! While many of these conditions have gotten the full attention of mainstream medicine there is a hidden factor in many of their diagnosis that is either unrecognized or dismissed – leaving its victims unable to resolve their digestive conflicts.
Fortunately for our listening audience, tonight Dr. Carolyn Dean will make digestive support her opening topic our weekly radio show and review many of the hidden factors in GI distress and offer safe, natural strategies for improving digestive performance.
Identifying the Culprit
While many health care professionals will target symptoms, Dr. Dean prefers to reveal the underlying cause of the conditions. Candida is one of the 400 organisms that live in our mouth, digestive tract, vagina and on our skin. Most of the time they all get along with their neighbors. When you begin taking antibiotics, the whole delicate balance is lost. Antibiotics wipe out most of the good and the bad bacteria leaving yeast unharmed. In the absence of any competition, yeast colonies grow into all the empty nooks and crannies of the large intestine and even the small intestine. Sugar from our diet feeds yeast and with the special lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria wiped out, there is no more production of lactic acid to protect the delicate intestinal and vaginal tissues from marauding yeast.
The beast, Candida albicans, growing wildly inside our bodies is an epidemic out of control. Most people, if they think of it at all, imagine yeast as just a pesky vaginal infection that a treatment of vaginal cream will cure overnight. Unfortunately, that’s just not the case for millions of people, especially women who suffer an astonishing array of health complaints from yeast overgrowth, yeast allergy, and a build up of yeast toxins.
Leaky Gut: An Open Door To Our Tissues
It is a scientific fact that when yeast cells reach a certain critical mass they change from a round budding stage to a thread-like tissue invasive stage. They are simply running out of food and looking for more. They pack their bags and emigrate from their main home in the large intestine into the small intestine. In the small intestine, the yeast threads poke holes in the intestinal lining. With this superhighway to the blood stream, there is nothing to stop yeast chemical by-products (all 180 of them), undigested food molecules, bacterial toxins, and other chemicals from taking a one-way ride. The holes are not necessarily big enough to allow yeast to get into the blood stream, so there is no blood infection of yeast, just hundreds of waste products that should be flushed down the toilet that ends up causing head-to-toe symptoms leak into the blood. Yes, leaky gut happens when toxins leak into the blood stream and tissues of the body.
When these toxins hit the blood stream they trigger widespread inflammatory and allergy reactions. Many of the toxins like aldehyde, alcohol, zymosan, arabinitol, and gliotoxin have been named. They impair the immune system and the central nervous system. Others block thyroid function, impair female hormones and cause symptoms of PMS and aggravate menopause but haven’t yet been properly studied. Inflammation is being investigated as the underlying cause of heart disease, bowel disease, arthritic conditions, and autoimmune disease. It is also intimately involved with weight gain, fatigue, allergies, asthma, headaches, irritability, and dozens of other health complaints.
GERD – A Customer’s Testimony
For decades I suffered from severe bouts of acid reflux and heartburn [GERD] several times each week. Recently, I starting taking ReMag for an unrelated ailment. To my pleasant surprise the supplemental magnesium not only cured the ailment for which I was taking it, it also completely stopped my episodes of acid reflux and heartburn. I have since learned that acid reflux is caused by stomach spasms which cause acid (which healthy stomachs are designed by nature to tolerate and utilize) to be ejected into the esophagus which is not designed to be exposed to stomach acid and burns when it is so exposed.
